Aussie holiday intentions on the rise

It appears Australians are keen to get away from it all this year, with a growing number of people intending to travel over the next 12 months.

New figures from Roy Morgan Research showed 70 per cent of those polled in January said they are looking to book holidays in 2014 and 10 per cent of these are heading to a different country. This was a small increase from the 9 per cent recorded at the beginning of last year.

Domestic trips also appear to be growing in popularity, as 56 per cent of holidaymakers are committed to exploring locations closer to home, compared with 55 per cent in 2013. While the figures are only slight improvements on last year, Roy Morgan Research noted that economic conditions could encourage more people to enjoy Australia's tourism hotspots over the next 12 months.

Jane Ianniello, international director of tourism, travel and leisure at the organisation, said: "The good news for the domestic market is that the weakening Australian dollar may already be encouraging more people to holiday domestically."

Ms Ianniello said some demographics are more likely to travel than others, with 75 per cent of financially secure middle-age couples doing so in the last 12 months. This is compared with 59 per cent of the rest of the population.

"Well off, mid-life couples looking forward to enjoying their retirements in style …  would like to holiday in NSW coastal destinations, the Hunter Valley and other wine regions, the Blue Mountains, Melbourne and NSW ski destinations," she stated.

If you are intending to take a holiday this year – either overseas or in Australia – now may be the time to upgrade your tradies insurance to include comprehensive travel cover. At Trades Insurance, you can benefit from a range of travel insurance options that protect you from various potential calamities while on holiday, such as medical expenses, theft of valuables, baggage delays and trip cancellations.
